Mercedes EV charger: which model suits your car?

Your exact model decides which EV charger fits best. The fully electric EQ models nearly all charge at up to 11 kW at home on alternating current (AC). That covers the EQA, EQB, EQC, EQE, EQE SUV, EQS, EQS SUV and EQV. The plug-in hybrids from the C, E, GLC and GLE ranges charge more slowly. Expect 3.7 to 7.4 kW, depending on the version.

Charging specifications per Mercedes model

Every electric Mercedes uses a Type 2 connector, the European standard that home chargers are built around. The maximum charging power at home differs per range. Here are the main models.

Some versions of the EQE and EQS are available with an optional 22 kW on-board charger. Not sure which one you have? Your model page lists the exact power your Mercedes accepts at home. 

Without that option, a 22 kW charger adds nothing. The car still stops at 11 kW, so you would pay for capacity it cannot use.

Which EV charger suits a Mercedes? 

Most electric Mercedes models charge at 11 kW. An 11 kW charger on a three-phase supply is therefore the logical choice for nearly every EQ. Three-phase means the charger uses all three power lines in your fuse box instead of one. You then use the full charging power. An EQB goes from empty to full in a little over seven hours. 

Do you have a single-phase supply at home? Then you charge more slowly, and how much slower depends on your exact model. Your model page lists the single-phase figure. For a plug-in hybrid the difference matters less, because the battery is a lot smaller.

Look for a charger with a built-in MID meter as well. That is a certified kWh meter inside the unit, and it records exactly how much electricity your car takes. You then know what charging at home costs you, separately from the rest of your household use. You will find models with such a meter in both our 11 kW and 22 kW ranges.

What charging power do most electric Mercedes models have? 

The EQ models charge at home at up to 11 kW AC through a Type 2 connector. An 11 kW charger on a three-phase supply uses that in full. Several EQE and EQS versions are available with an optional 22 kW on-board charger. Plug-in hybrids charge more slowly, around 3.7 to 7.4 kW depending on the version. 

Do I need a single-phase or three-phase supply for my Mercedes? 

To charge an EQ model at the full 11 kW you need a three-phase supply. On a single-phase supply the car charges more slowly, and the exact figure differs per model. Your model page lists it. For a plug-in hybrid with a small battery, single-phase charging is often enough already. If you are unsure, have a qualified electrician assess your fuse box.
