Tesla Model S 90D EV charger: which one suits you best?

The Tesla Model S 90D charges at home at up to 11 kW through a Type 2 connection. Its 85 kWh usable battery takes you a long way between charges. A full charge at home does take a while. With the standard on-board charger an 11 kW charger gets the most out of this car. The Tesla EV charger overview brings the Model S versions together.

For the Model S 90D we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Does your car have the optional 16.5 kW on-board charger? Then a 22 kW unit is the better match.

Which EV charger suits the Tesla Model S 90D?

At home the Model S 90D draws up to 11 kW across three phases. Three phases means your home has three live wires instead of one, so a charger can deliver three times as much. An 11 kW charger uses that in full.

With the standard on-board charger a 22 kW unit adds nothing, because the car caps itself at 11 kW. Cars fitted with the optional 16.5 kW on-board charger are the exception. On a 22 kW EV charger they charge at around 17 kW instead of 11 kW, so check your car before you rule that out.

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It records what your car takes, separately from the rest of your household use. At 11 kW the choice is narrower than at 22 kW, but chargers with a built-in meter do exist. You will find them among our EV chargers with a MID meter.

Its 85 kWh usable battery keeps the charger busy for most of a night, which makes load balancing worth having. The charger watches how much power the rest of your home is drawing. When it has to, it turns the charging power down. That keeps the main fuse out of trouble on a busy evening. Our EV chargers with dynamic load balancing do this on their own.

Our EV chargers for the home are the easiest place to start if this is your first charging point. We always recommend having a qualified electrician make the connection. We arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany, and in Germany that runs through a free quote. Outside those three countries you arrange the work locally.

How long does the Tesla Model S 90D take to charge?

On an 11 kW charger a full charge takes around 9 hours, including charging losses. That fits neatly into one night. Plug in during the evening and the car is ready before you leave. On a single phase the picture changes: a 16 A connection gives 3.7 kW and a 32 A connection 7.4 kW. Only three phases give you the full 11 kW.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Tesla Model S 90D need a three-phase connection?

For the full 11 kW, yes. On a single-phase connection the car charges at 3.7 kW on 16 A or at 7.4 kW on 32 A. A full charge then takes considerably longer. Three phases are the fastest option at home.

Why does a MID meter matter for the Tesla Model S 90D?

It shows you exactly what your car costs to charge, apart from your household use. With a battery this size that adds up, so the meter earns its place. At 11 kW the choice is smaller than at 22 kW, but it exists.
