This version charges at home at 11 kW over a three-phase connection. That adds roughly 50 kilometres of range per hour, enough to fill the Seal every night. The extra power of the dual motor shows on the road, not at the wallbox. The real question is which features you want alongside those 11 kW.

A built-in MID meter is worth checking first. MID stands for the European Measuring Instruments Directive, and a MID-certified kWh meter logs every session to the kilowatt-hour. With a battery this size you charge a lot. The meter shows what that costs you, separately from the rest of your household use. That takes it from 10 to 80 percent in roughly half an hour. A 22 kW charger adds nothing at home, because the onboard charger keeps the Seal at 11 kW.

Does the BYD Seal AWD Excellence need a three-phase connection?

To charge at the full 11 kW at home, yes. You need a three-phase connection of 3x16 amps. On a single phase the Seal still takes 7.4 kW from a 32 A line, and 3.7 kW from a 16 A line. Both stretch a full charge well past a working day. Your grid operator, the company that owns the connection to your home, can upgrade you to three phases.

Does the Seal charge faster on a 22 kW charger?

No. The onboard charger of the BYD Seal accepts a maximum of 11 kW of alternating current. A 22 kW unit will not fill this car faster at home. It only pays off if you want something the 11 kW range barely offers. A built-in MID meter is the clearest example, because at 11 kW the choice is narrow.

A MID-certified meter records exactly how much electricity you charge at home. With an 82.5 kWh battery those sessions are large.
