Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive EV charger: Which one is the best fit?

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive is an exceptional car: a fully electric supercar of which only a very small number were produced. Should you own or encounter one, it can be charged at home through a Type 2 connection at a maximum AC charging power of 22 kW. With a 60 kWh battery, you should choose an EV charger that matches the capacity of your electrical connection. Also view all Mercedes-Benz EV chargers in our overview.

For the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive, we recommend either an 11 kW EV charger or a 22 kW EV charger, depending on your home electrical connection.

Which EV charger is suitable for the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive?

The SLS AMG Electric Drive supports three-phase charging at up to 22 kW, which was faster than most electric vehicles of its time. Nevertheless, an 11 kW EV charger is the most practical choice for many homes: it charges the car fully overnight and is compatible with many standard three-phase residential connections. To use the full 22 kW charging capacity, you need a three-phase connection rated at 3 × 32 amps. This type of connection may involve higher grid and installation costs. Choose an EV charger with an integrated MID meter when the charged kilowatt-hours must be reimbursed by an employer or leasing company. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for ERE registration. The ERE scheme applies exclusively in the Netherlands.

Standard home chargingEasee Charge Up 22 kWNoA compact and intelligent EV charger that can be configured for 11 or 22 kW, depending on the electrical connection. It is therefore suitable for both a standard three-phase connection and the maximum charging capacity of the SLS AMG Electric Drive. It does not have an integrated MID meter.

The charged kilowatt-hours can therefore be recorded accurately for employer or leasing-company reimbursement, business accounting and, exclusively in the Netherlands, ERE registration.

How long does it take to charge the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive?

With an 11 kW EV charger, charging the 60 kWh battery takes approximately 5.5 hours in theory. When normal charging losses are taken into account, you should allow around 5.5 to 6 hours. With a three-phase 22 kW connection and a suitable EV charger, a full charging session takes approximately three hours. The car always determines the maximum charging power: a more powerful EV charger will not exceed the 22 kW supported by the onboard charger.

Which charging cable do you need?

The SLS AMG Electric Drive has a Type 2 connection. To charge the car while travelling or at another charging station, you need a separate Type 2 charging cable rated for 22 kW or 3 × 32 amps. At home, you can simply use the attached cable when the EV charger has a fixed charging cable. We recommend having the connection installed by a certified installer, as this improves safety and may be important for your insurance coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Does the recommended EV charger have a MID meter?

The Zaptec Go 2 has an integrated MID meter. The Easee Charge Up and Easee Charge Lite do not have a MID-certified meter. A MID meter accurately and verifiably records charging consumption. It is particularly useful when the charged kilowatt-hours must be reimbursed by an employer or leasing company. In the Netherlands, it may also be required for ERE registration. The ERE scheme applies exclusively in the Netherlands.

Do you need a three-phase connection for this Mercedes-Benz?

Yes. To charge at 11 or 22 kW, you need a three-phase connection. An 11 kW charging capacity requires 3 × 16 amps, while the full 22 kW requires 3 × 32 amps. With a single-phase connection, the car charges considerably more slowly. An intelligent EV charger with dynamic load balancing is recommended so the charging power is automatically adjusted to the electricity consumption elsewhere in the property.
