Tesla Model S P100D EV charger: which one fits best?
The Tesla Model S P100D charges three phase at home. As standard it takes 11 kW, and with the upgraded onboard charger up to 16.5 kW, well above what most EVs manage. That genuinely changes your choice of charger: only at 16.5 kW do you get the full benefit of a 22 kW unit. Which EV charger suits the Tesla Model S P100D?
Check first which onboard charger your P100D has: the standard car draws 11 kW, the upgraded one up to 16.5 kW. Only the 16.5 kW car uses a 22 kW charger to the full, on a three phase connection. In practice a 22 kW unit then adds roughly 65 to 70 km of range per hour of charging, against about 45 km on an 11 kW charger. If your car is the standard 11 kW version, an 11 kW charger already gives it everything it can take.
Choose a charger with a MID meter, a certified kWh meter that records exactly what goes into the car. You need those certified readings whenever you have to prove your charging to someone else, an employer, a lease company, a landlord or an owners' association, because without them each of those settlements is only an estimate. In the Netherlands there is an extra reason: from 2026 private drivers can earn back up to 500 euros a year through their energy supplier, but only with a certified meter, and that scheme applies in the Netherlands only. Two more features matter at this power level. A 22 kW charger with dynamic load balancing lowers its output by itself when the rest of the house draws heavily, which is what keeps a heavy three phase charger from tripping your main fuse. How long does the Tesla Model S P100D take to charge?
With a 22 kW charger the upgraded P100D draws its maximum 16.5 kW. A nearly empty 95 kWh battery is then full again in about 7 hours, charging losses and end-of-cycle taper included, comfortably inside a night time off-peak window. With an 11 kW charger or the standard car, count on roughly 10 hours for a complete charge. For most drivers who charge at home overnight that is more than enough.

Do I need an EV charger with a MID meter for the Model S P100D?
If you have to settle your charging with someone else, yes. A MID certified kWh meter measures your charging precisely, which is what an employer, a lease company, a landlord or an owners' association needs. In the Netherlands it is also the condition for the scheme that lets private drivers earn back up to 500 euros a year from 2026, a scheme that applies in the Netherlands only. If you only ever charge for yourself, a charger without the meter costs less and still works fine.
Does the Tesla Model S P100D need a three phase connection?
For its full power, yes. The upgraded P100D reaches up to 16.5 kW at home, and that is only possible on a three phase connection combined with a 22 kW charger. With a lighter connection, or the standard 11 kW car, it simply keeps charging at a lower power.
