Tesla Model S P90D EV charger: which one fits best?

The Tesla Model S P90D has a usable battery of 85.5 kWh. At home it charges at 11 kW as standard. Some cars left the factory with the optional dual charger, which lifts that to 22 kW. So the right charger depends on the version standing in your driveway. Our overview of Tesla Model S EV chargers and the full range of Tesla EV chargers cover the other versions.

For the Tesla Model S P90D we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

That power suits every P90D and gets the maximum out of the standard onboard charger. It does need a three-phase connection at home, so 16 amps on each of three live wires. Check which supply your home has before you order. With the dual charger the car draws 32 amps per phase. Only a 22 kW EV charger then gives full speed.

Which Tesla Model S P90D EV charger suits you best?

Does your P90D have the standard onboard charger? Then 11 kW is the logical choice. Put that car on a 22 kW charger and it simply stays at 11 kW. The charger does not make it faster. With the dual charger it works the other way round. An 11 kW charger supplies 3 x 16 A. Your car then never exceeds 11 kW, so you leave a large part of its charging speed unused.

The Tesla Model S charger type in Europe is Type 2, the standard European connector. Our range is built around Type 2, so the connector is rarely the deciding factor. For home charging the choice is really about power and features.

One of those features is a MID meter: a calibrated kWh meter built into the charger. It measures what you put into the car separately from your household use. So you know exactly what charging costs. Availability differs per power level, though. In our range of chargers with a MID meter the calibrated meter is easy to find from 22 kW upward. At 11 kW the choice is very limited. Since 11 kW is our advice here, treat that meter as a bonus, not as a given.

An 11 kW EV charger is the safe buy for any P90D. Owners with the dual charger should size up to a 22 kW EV charger to use the full speed.

How long does the Tesla Model S P90D take to charge?

A battery of 85.5 kWh fills in about 9 hours and 15 minutes on an 11 kW EV charger. That figure includes charging losses, so it is longer than a plain division sum. It also fits a night on the driveway neatly. With the dual charger and a 22 kW charger the same battery is full in about 4.5 hours. On the road you use a Tesla Supercharger, which charges on DC up to 120 kW. From 10 to 80 percent takes roughly 42 minutes. An EV charger with app control lets you move a home session to your cheapest hours.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my Model S P90D has the dual charger?

Your vehicle specification lists it. Bought yours second hand? Then check that spec sheet or ask a Tesla service point. The dual charger was a factory option, so not every car has it. Without it your P90D charges at 11 kW. With it the car charges clearly faster. Confirm what your own car has before you choose.

Why does a MID meter matter for the Model S P90D?

A built-in MID meter records your charging accurately. You then see what home charging costs you, separate from the rest of your electricity bill. Whichever charger you pick, have it connected by a qualified electrician. That is safer and it matters for your insurance. Wallbox Discounter arranges installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. We ship worldwide, but installation is limited to those three countries.
