Tesla Model X 90D charger: which one fits best?
The Tesla Model X 90D charges at home at up to 11 kW through a Type 2 connector. It uses three phases of the grid at once, each carrying 16 amps. Its onboard charger sets that ceiling, not the charger on your wall. The battery holds 90 kWh, of which around 83 kWh is usable. Charging overnight at 11 kW is exactly what this large SUV needs. The Model X range runs from the 60D to the P100D, and the charging advice differs per battery, so compare them in our overview of all Tesla EV chargers.
For the Tesla Model X 90D we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

Which charger fits the Tesla Model X 90D?
The Model X 90D has an 11 kW onboard charger as standard. A heavier 22 kW charger will not charge this car any faster. With that standard charger it never draws more than those 11 kW. An 11 kW charger is therefore the logical choice, and it fills the large battery comfortably overnight.
At 11 kW you can pick from the features that matter for a car like this. A charger with a MID meter has a certified kWh meter built in. It records what went into your car, separate from your household use, so you know exactly what charging costs you.
Two more features earn their place on a car this size. An EV charger with dynamic load balancing keeps measuring what the rest of your home uses. It lowers the charging power when needed, so your main fuse never trips. An EV charger with an app lets you follow a long overnight session from your phone.

How long does the Tesla Model X 90D take to charge?
The sum is simple. About 83 usable kWh divided by 11 kW comes to roughly 7.5 hours for a completely empty battery. Charging is never fully efficient, and the last stretch slows down. In practice a full charge takes over nine hours. Plug the car in during the evening and you drive off with a full battery in the morning.
On a single-phase supply this car charges at 7.4 kW. Its onboard charger takes up to 32 amps on one phase. The plain sum then comes to just over 11 hours, and close to 14 hours including charging losses.
The Model X 90D uses a Type 2 connector. To charge it away from home you need a separate Type 2 charging cable. At home you charge through the charger's own fixed connection.
Fuse box and installation
To use the full 11 kW you need a three-phase supply at home. Three-phase means your home is connected to three separate live conductors of the grid instead of one. It is not the same as having three circuits in your fuse box. On a single-phase supply this car reaches 7.4 kW, whatever charger you install.
Do you also run a heat pump or an induction hob? Then choose a charger with dynamic load balancing, so your main fuse holds up when everything runs at once. We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician. It is safer and it matters for your insurance. Wallbox Discounter arranges installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany, and nowhere else. Shipping is worldwide; installation is not.

Frequently asked questions
Can the Tesla Model X 90D charge faster than 11 kW on a 22 kW charger?
Not with the standard onboard charger, which tops out at 11 kW AC. A 22 kW charger does no harm, but it adds no speed. Some cars of this generation left the factory with the optional heavier onboard charger, which does accept more. Check your own car before you pay for power you cannot use.
Does the Tesla Model X 90D need a three-phase supply?
For the full 11 kW, yes. On a single phase this car charges at 7.4 kW. That is still a usable speed, but a full charge takes about half again as long. Ask your electricity network operator what a three-phase connection costs and takes in your country.
Why does a MID meter matter for the Tesla Model X 90D?
A MID meter is a certified kWh meter inside the charger. It records your charging separately from the rest of your household use. The cost of a full battery is never guesswork. On a car with a 90 kWh battery, the gap between an estimate and the real figure adds up quickly.
