Tesla Model S Long Range Plus / Performance EV charger: Which one is the best fit?
The Tesla Model S Long Range Plus and Performance both charge at home at a maximum of 11 kW AC through a Type 2 connection and a three-phase EV charger. Three-phase charging means that the car charges through three electrical phases simultaneously, providing the highest home charging speed supported by this Model S. A more powerful charger will not charge the car any faster because the vehicle determines the maximum charging power. Would you first like to compare more options? Which EV charger fits the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus / Performance?
If your home has a three-phase connection, an 11 kW charger is the logical choice. It delivers the full 3 x 16 A of a standard three-phase connection, and it suits every car in this series. If your Model S has the 16.5 kW on-board charger, a 22 kW EV charger lets the car use that extra power, provided your connection can supply at least 3 x 25 A.
A MID meter is worth looking at as well. It is a certified kWh meter that records the electricity you charge at home separately from your household consumption, so you know exactly what charging your Model S costs. In our 11 kW range a built-in MID meter is still the exception, while you will find more choice at 22 kW. Compare the options on our page with EV chargers with MID meter.
A full charge takes around ten hours, so your charger is often running in the evening while the rest of the house uses power too. EV chargers with dynamic load balancing measure how much power your home is using and adjust the charging power automatically, so your main fuse is not overloaded.
Our range of 11 kW EV chargers covers every car in this series, and our full range of home chargers is the place to start if you want to compare more widely. Not sure which model suits your fuse box? We give independent advice, because we are not tied to any single brand.
How long does the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus / Performance take to charge?
The bare calculation is a usable battery of around 95 kWh divided by 11 kW, which comes to about 8.6 hours. In practice part of the energy is lost as heat, so a full charge from almost empty takes around 10.5 hours. If you plug in at 11 pm, the car is full by mid-morning, and a normal overnight top-up is shorter still. With the 16.5 kW on-board charger and a 22 kW charger, a full charge takes around seven hours.
On a single-phase connection the charging power drops to 7.4 kW at 32 A, or 3.7 kW on a 16 A circuit. A full charge then takes around 16 hours at 7.4 kW and considerably longer at 3.7 kW. For the large battery of the Model S, a three-phase connection is therefore strongly recommended.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Tesla Model S Long Range Plus need a three-phase connection?
For the full 11 kW, yes. The car charges at home on three phases, so on a single-phase connection you get at most 7.4 kW, and only 3.7 kW on a 16 A circuit. Don't have a three-phase connection yet? Ask your electricity network operator whether an upgrade is possible at your address. We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician, because that is safer and matters for your insurance.
Why is a MID meter useful for my Model S?
A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that records your charging consumption accurately. You see exactly how much electricity your Model S has taken at home, separately from the rest of your household. That gives you a reliable figure for your own budget, and it is the measurement you need if you ever want to settle charging costs with someone else.
