Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine EV charger: which one fits best?

The Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine is a plug-in hybrid. At home it charges at a maximum of 3.6 kW on a single phase. That is worth knowing: the car cannot charge any faster. An 11 kW or 22 kW EV charger therefore saves you no charging time with this Volvo. Every home charger delivers its full 3.6 kW, so you choose on features rather than power. Driving another Volvo? Our overview of all Volvo EV chargers shows the charging power of every model.

For the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine we recommend a charger from our 11 kW range.

The 3.6 kW applies to the XC40 T5 Twin Engine described on this page. Check your vehicle documents or the charging display to confirm the charging power of your own car.

Which EV charger suits the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine?

The XC40 T5 Twin Engine charges at 3.6 kW at home. You therefore do not need the most powerful charger in our range. Even the lightest charger gives this Volvo its full charging power, because the car itself stops at 3.6 kW. Still, we advise most drivers to choose an 11 kW model with a MID meter.

A MID meter is a calibrated kWh meter that records your charging consumption precisely. It measures the electricity you charge at home separately from your household use, so you know exactly what charging costs you. An 11 kW charger is also ready straight away for your next, fully electric car.

How long does the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine take to charge?

The calculation is simple: divide the usable battery capacity of about 8.5 kWh by the charging power of 3.6 kW. That comes to roughly 2.4 hours. Charging losses add a little, so charging from empty to full takes about 3 hours in practice.

The car limits its charging power to 3.6 kW. A 7.4 kW, 11 kW or 22 kW charger makes no difference. The charging time stays the same. On an ordinary domestic socket, charging takes longer and puts a heavier load on your circuit. A fixed EV charger is safer and more convenient. The XC40 T5 uses a Type 2 connector. You only need a separate Type 2 charging cable if you want to charge at a public charging point on the road.

Installing your EV charger

We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified installer. That is safer and important for your insurance. Would you like your EV charger including installation? We arrange it in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany through our certified installation partners. In Germany, installation starts with a free quote. That way you can be sure everything goes right the first time.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine need a 3-phase EV charger?

No. The XC40 T5 Twin Engine charges at home on a single phase at up to 3.6 kW. A 3-phase charger of 11 kW or 22 kW does not charge this car any faster. We still recommend an 11 kW model, mainly for the MID meter. You are then also ready for a future fully electric car.

Why is a MID meter important for this Volvo?

A MID meter is a calibrated kWh meter that keeps an exact record of your charging consumption. You see how much electricity goes into your car, separate from your household use, so you know what charging really costs. Do you charge a company or lease car at home? Then the certified reading also gives you a reliable basis for reimbursing the charging costs.
