The Volkswagen ID.4 Pure from model years 2021 to 2023 charges at up to 7.2 kW at home. That settles your choice straight away: a 7.4 kW EV charger on a single-phase connection uses the full charging power of this version. An 11 kW charger does not charge it any faster, unless your ID.4 Pure is a newer car with an 11 kW on-board charger, as fitted from model year 2024. Not sure which version you have? Which EV charger fits the Volkswagen ID.4 Pure?
The ID.4 Pure takes no more than 7.2 kW at home, so a 7.4 kW charger is the logical choice. It uses the full charging power without you paying for capacity the car cannot use. On a three-phase connection the car draws 16 A on two phases, which also adds up to 7.2 kW. An 11 kW charger works fine there too, it just does not charge faster.
A built-in MID meter is worth considering. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter inside the charger. It records the electricity you charge at home separately from the rest of your household, so you know exactly what charging costs you. In our range, chargers with a built-in MID meter start at 11 kW, and at 7.4 kW we currently have no model with one. Do you want a certified meter and have a three-phase connection? How long does the Volkswagen ID.4 Pure take to charge?
The plain sum is 52 kWh divided by 7.2 kW, roughly 7 hours. In practice a full charge from 0 to 100% takes about 8.5 hours, because some energy is lost as heat while charging. Plug the car in at 11 pm and it is full by the morning. On the road, the ID.4 Pure tops up quickly at a DC fast charger and goes from 10 to 80% in about half an hour.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Volkswagen ID.4 Pure need a three-phase connection?
No. The ID.4 Pure charges at up to 7.2 kW, and a single-phase 32 A connection is enough to reach that. A three-phase connection with an 11 kW charger gives the same 7.2 kW, because the car then uses two phases at 16 A. It only charges faster on three phases if your ID.4 Pure is a newer car with an 11 kW on-board charger, as fitted from model year 2024.
Why is a MID meter useful for the ID.4 Pure?
A MID meter measures the electricity you charge at home with a certified kWh reading, kept apart from your household consumption. That gives you a precise record of what charging the ID.4 Pure costs. Keep in mind that in our range a built-in MID meter starts at 11 kW, so for a 7.4 kW charger you would choose a model without one.
Do I need to have the EV charger installed?
We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician. That is safer and matters for your insurance. You can order the charger on its own. In the Netherlands, Flanders (Belgium) and Germany you can also have the installation arranged by us; our fixed installation partner carries out the work.
