Which EV charger suits the MG Marvel R?
The Marvel R has a three-phase 11 kW onboard charger as standard. An 11 kW unit matches it exactly. Put it on a 22 kW charger and it still draws 11 kW. The limit sits in the car, not in the wall. You would be paying for headroom the Marvel R cannot use.
The long charge is not a drawback here, it is the plan. Seven hours sounds like a lot, but you are asleep for most of it. What matters more is that those hours land on the cheapest part of the day. That makes two features worth having on this particular car.
Load balancing means the charger drops its own power when the house draws a lot, so the main fuse never trips. With 70 kWh going in overnight, that is a real safeguard rather than a nicety. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter inside the charger. It records what goes into the car separately from your household use. You then know what a full battery really costs. In our range that feature depends on power. Only one 11 kW model carries a certified meter, so shortlist it early. Step up to 22 kW and the choice of chargers with a MID meter opens right up.
The Marvel R charges over a type 2 socket, like almost every modern wall unit. A loose type 2 charging cable is only needed for socket chargers or for charging away from home. New to this? Our home EV chargers are the simplest starting point.
How long does the MG Marvel R take to charge?
Seventy kWh divided by 11 kW comes out at just over six hours of pure charging. In practice a full charge takes around seven hours, because some energy is always lost on the way in. Plug in after the evening meal and the car is full by morning.
Per hour on the wall unit you add roughly 50 kilometres of range. For daily commuting you rarely need a full charge at all. On the road the DC side takes over: from 10 to 80% takes about 38 minutes at a rapid charger.

Does the MG Marvel R need a three-phase connection?
Yes, to use the full 11 kW you need three phases at home. On a single-phase connection the Marvel R charges more slowly, up to 7.4 kW at 32 A. Your grid operator can tell you what your address already has, and can arrange an upgrade.
We strongly recommend having that work done by a qualified electrician, and in several countries it is regulated work. We arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. Can the MG Marvel R charge faster on a 22 kW charger?
No. The onboard charger is capped at 11 kW on AC. A 22 kW unit charges it at exactly the same speed. For home use an 11 kW charger is therefore the sensible choice. For more speed on a trip, use a DC rapid charger. The Marvel R accepts up to 94 kW there.
Why is a MID meter useful on the MG Marvel R?
A MID meter measures your charging accurately and to a certified standard. With a 70 kWh battery, a single full charge is a noticeable amount of electricity.
