Which EV charger suits a Subaru?
Because the Subaru Solterra charges at a maximum of 6.6 kW on a single phase, you do not need a particularly powerful EV charger to match the car itself. The main choice is whether you want to optimise charging speed for the Solterra or choose a three-phase charger with more flexibility for a future EV.
A three-phase 11 kW EV charger supplies 16 A per phase. Because the Solterra charges on a single phase, it can use only one of those phases and will charge at around 3.7 kW. A suitable single-phase charger with a higher current can allow the Solterra to make use of more of its 6.6 kW maximum AC charging capacity.
If you want a future-proof solution, an 11 kW EV charger can still be a practical choice. The Solterra will charge at a lower power, while a future three-phase EV may be able to use the full 11 kW.
Also consider the built-in energy meter. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that accurately records how much electricity is delivered through the charging point. The Subaru Solterra uses a Type 2 connection for AC charging. If your home charger has a fixed Type 2 cable, you do not need a separate charging cable. With a socketed home charger or a public Type 2 charge point without a fixed cable, a separate Type 2 charging cable is required.
