Which EV charger is suitable for the BMW i7 xDrive60?

If your BMW i7 xDrive60 has the standard 11 kW onboard charger, a 3-phase 11 kW EV charger is the logical choice. This allows you to use the vehicle’s full AC charging capacity. A 22 kW EV charger can also be used, but it will not charge this version any faster. It may still be useful if you plan to connect another electric vehicle with a higher AC charging capacity in the future.

If your i7 is equipped with the optional or market-dependent 22 kW onboard charger, a 22 kW EV charger can approximately halve the charging time. Before ordering, check the vehicle specification, data sheet or BMW menu to confirm which maximum AC charging power your vehicle actually supports.

If you need accurate and certified measurement of charging consumption, you should also look for an integrated MID meter. This records exactly how many kilowatt-hours have been charged through the EV charger. It is particularly useful when you use the i7 as a company or lease vehicle and want the home charging costs to be reimbursed by your employer or business. If the EV charger does not have an integrated MID meter, a suitable separate MID-certified energy meter can be installed. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for participation in the ERE scheme. The ERE scheme is only available in the Netherlands.

How long does it take to charge the BMW i7 xDrive60?

Using an 11 kW EV charger, the usable 101.7 kWh battery can be charged from 0 to 100% in approximately 10 hours 45 minutes to 11 hours, including normal charging losses. A full charge therefore fits within a long overnight charging session. In everyday use, however, the battery will rarely be completely empty, so daily top-up charging usually takes considerably less time.

If the i7 xDrive60 has a 22 kW onboard charger and a suitably powerful 3-phase installation is available, the charging time falls to approximately five and a half hours. A 22 kW EV charger does not provide a speed advantage for the standard 11 kW version.

On the road, the BMW i7 xDrive60 can charge via CCS at up to approximately 195 kW DC. Under favourable conditions, charging from 10 to 80% takes around 34 minutes. The actual charging power depends on factors including battery temperature, state of charge and the output of the fast-charging station.

The BMW i7 xDrive60 has a Type 2 connection. You need a separate Type 2 charging cable for an EV charger with a socket or when charging at a public AC charging station without a fixed cable.

Does the BMW i7 xDrive60 need a 3-phase connection?

Yes, to charge at 11 kW. This requires a 3-phase connection rated at 3 × 16 amps. For 22 kW charging, you need a suitably equipped vehicle, a 22 kW EV charger and an installation rated at 3 × 32 amps. On a single-phase connection, the i7 charges considerably more slowly.

Does every BMW i7 xDrive60 have a 22 kW onboard charger?

No. Depending on the model year, market and specification, the BMW i7 xDrive60 may support either 11 or 22 kW AC charging. Before ordering an EV charger, check the vehicle specification or the maximum AC charging power shown in the BMW menu.

Why is a MID meter useful for the BMW i7 xDrive60?

No. Only a BMW i7 xDrive60 with a 22 kW onboard charger can use the full power of a 22 kW EV charger. The standard 11 kW version will still charge at a maximum of 11 kW when connected to a 22 kW EV charger.
