Which EV charger is suitable for the BYD Atto 3?

Because the BYD Atto 3 charges at a maximum of 11 kW AC, an 11 kW EV charger is the logical choice. A 22 kW charger will not charge the car any faster at home because the vehicle’s onboard charger limits the charging power to 11 kW. How long does it take to charge the BYD Atto 3?

With an 11 kW EV charger, a complete charging session for the BYD Atto 3 takes approximately 6 to 6.5 hours when normal charging losses are taken into account. Connect the car in the evening and it will be fully charged again the following morning. If you only have a single-phase connection at home, the Atto 3 normally charges at a maximum of 3.7 kW and a complete charging session takes considerably longer. A three-phase connection is therefore required to use the full 11 kW charging capacity.

The Atto 3 has a Type 2 connection, which is also used by most modern EV chargers. To charge the car at a public charging station while travelling, a separate Type 2 charging cable is useful. At home, you use either the charger’s fixed cable or a separate cable for its Type 2 socket.

Yes, if you want to use the full 11 kW charging power. The Atto 3 charges using three phases at 16 amps. With a single-phase connection, the charging power is normally limited to a maximum of 3.7 kW. Your grid operator or installer can check whether your electrical connection can be upgraded to three phases.
