BYD Tang EV charger: which one suits you best?
The BYD Tang sold between 2022 and 2024 is a seven-seat SUV with an 86.4 kWh battery. At home, it charges on a single phase at up to 7.4 kW. That one fact largely determines your choice of charger. A 7.4 kW EV charger already gives the Tang everything it can accept, so a higher-powered charger will not charge it any faster. Driving a different model? Why 7.4 kW is enough for the BYD Tang
At home, you charge with alternating current (AC). A fast charger along the motorway uses direct current (DC), which allows much higher charging power. Most modern EVs take their AC power over three phases, meaning three separate live wires deliver current at the same time. The Tang works differently. Its onboard charger uses one phase and can draw up to 32 A, which corresponds to 7.4 kW.
A single-phase charger with this output therefore matches the car exactly. It also keeps the installation relatively simple because you do not need a high-power three-phase charger just to reach the car's maximum AC charging speed.
There is one important point to keep in mind. A three-phase 11 kW EV charger supplies 16 A per phase. The Tang uses only one of those three phases, so charging power drops to about 3.7 kW and charging takes roughly twice as long. If you already have a three-phase connection at home, a 22 kW EV charger can supply 32 A per phase, allowing the Tang to retain its full 7.4 kW charging power.

Which EV charger suits the BYD Tang?
For the Tang, you want a charger that can deliver 7.4 kW on one phase. Two features are particularly useful at this power level. A charger with an app lets you set charging times and monitor charging sessions from your phone. If you have solar panels, a solar EV charger can use your own surplus solar energy to charge the car.
Another useful feature is a MID-certified kWh meter. This is a certified meter built into the charger that records exactly how much electricity is used for charging, separately from the rest of your household consumption. The BYD Tang has a Type 2 connection, like almost every charger we sell. At home, you charge through the charger's socket or fixed cable, as with the models in our range of home EV chargers. A separate Type 2 charging cable is useful if you also want to charge at public charge points.
How long does the BYD Tang take to charge?
Divide 86.4 kWh by 7.4 kW and you get just under 12 hours of theoretical charging time. Add the losses that occur during every charging session and a full charge takes around 13.5 hours in practice. You will rarely start from zero, though. Plug the Tang in at 10 p.m. with 30 percent remaining and it can be fully charged again by the morning. For daily commuting, an overnight charge is usually more than sufficient. On longer trips, you can use a DC fast charger, where the Tang accepts up to 120 kW.

A MID meter is useful if you want to measure home charging separately from the rest of your household consumption. It does not make the Tang charge any faster, but it provides a certified measurement of the electricity used for charging. If you want this feature while keeping the full charging speed, a suitable 22 kW charger with a MID meter can be an option.
