Which EV charger suits a Seres?

The Seres 3 has an onboard charger of up to 6.6 kW and charges on a single phase. This matters more than it may seem. A three-phase 11 kW EV charger supplies 3 × 16 A. A single-phase car only uses one of those phases, so your Seres charges at around 3.7 kW instead of the full 6.6 kW.

To reach the full charging power, the car needs up to 32 A on one phase. A single-phase 7.4 kW EV charger can provide this and is usually the most affordable way to reach the Seres' maximum charging speed. A three-phase 22 kW EV charger supplies up to 32 A per phase, so it can also provide the full 6.6 kW. It also gives you more capacity for a future car with a higher AC charging speed.

Also check whether the charger has a built-in MID meter. This is a certified kWh meter that measures the electricity used for charging separately from the rest of your household consumption. This makes it easier to see exactly how much electricity your car uses at home. The 7.4 kW chargers in our range do not have a built-in MID meter, and only some 11 kW models do. In the 22 kW range, more models offer this feature. You can find the relevant models under EV chargers with a MID meter.

This leaves you with a clear choice. If you want the full charging speed at the lowest cost, a 7.4 kW single-phase charger is the most obvious option, but without a built-in MID meter. If accurate certified metering is more important, look at the 11 kW range or higher. Keep in mind that an 11 kW three-phase charger will charge the Seres at only around 3.7 kW.

The Seres 3 charges at home through a Type 2 connection on a single phase. Its onboard charger accepts up to 6.6 kW. On a single-phase 16 A connection, the charging power is around 3.7 kW. A more powerful charger only increases the charging speed if it can provide enough current on that single phase.

Do I need an 11 kW or a 22 kW EV charger for my Seres?

That depends on what you want to achieve. An 11 kW EV charger is three-phase, so your Seres uses one phase at 16 A and charges at around 3.7 kW. A 22 kW EV charger can provide up to 32 A per phase, allowing the Seres to reach its full 6.6 kW charging power.
