The NIO EL6 100 kWh is the Long Range version with the largest battery of the EL6. Its capacity is 100 kWh, of which roughly 90 kWh is usable. At home it charges on alternating current at up to 11 kW, the ceiling of its onboard charger. With a battery this size a fixed charger earns its place. Which EV charger suits the NIO EL6 100 kWh?
The EL6 100 kWh charges at 11 kW over a three-phase connection. That spreads the load across three lines instead of one. An 11 kW EV charger is therefore the exact match. The onboard charger will not accept more, so a 22 kW model gains you nothing here.
A MID meter is the first feature worth weighing. It is a certified kWh meter that records exactly how much power goes into the car. That separates your charging from the rest of your household use. You can then see what driving actually costs. In our range that meter starts at 11 kW, so this car sits right at the point where you have the choice. The second is control. A battery of 90 usable kWh takes most of a night, so it helps to decide when that night starts. An EV charger with an app lets you set a start time and follow the session on your phone.
The EL6 has a Type 2 connection, so for charging away from home you need a matching Type 2 charging cable. At home you charge through the fixed connection of the charger. If you would rather keep things simple, the home EV chargers are a straightforward entry point.
How long does the NIO EL6 100 kWh take to charge?
On an 11 kW charger a full charge takes roughly 9 to 10 hours. The sum: about 90 usable kWh divided by 11 kW comes out at a little over 8 hours. Charging losses bring that up to 9 or 10 hours, from nearly empty to full. In practice you rarely charge from 0 to 100 percent. Plug in during the evening with 30 percent left and the car is ready well before morning. For longer trips you use a DC fast charger, where the EL6 100 kWh handles up to 180 kW.

Does the NIO EL6 100 kWh need a 22 kW EV charger?
No. The onboard charger of the EL6 100 kWh accepts 11 kW at most over alternating current. A 22 kW charger will not fill this car any faster, so an 11 kW model is the sensible choice. Do you want a charger that can handle 22 kW later for a different car? Then a dual-mode model is worth considering, because it works at both power levels.
Why does a MID meter matter on the NIO EL6 100 kWh?
A MID meter records your charging with a certified kWh meter. That tells you exactly what goes into the car, separate from your washing machine and your oven. The EL6 100 kWh has a 90 kWh usable battery and draws a lot of power per session. That difference is easy to see on your bill.
Should I have the EV charger installed?
We recommend it. Having the connection made by a qualified electrician is safer and it matters for your insurance. We arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany.
