Aiways U5 (2020-2022) EV charger: which one fits best?
The Aiways U5 built between 2020 and 2022 charges at home at up to 6.6 kW, over a single phase. That number decides everything about your charger. It also holds a catch that costs owners hours. A three-phase 11 kW unit spreads its power over three separate lines, and this car uses only one of them. So it does not speed the U5 up, it slows it down. Want to see the whole line-up first? For the Aiways U5 (2020-2022) we recommend a charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the Aiways U5 (2020-2022)?
This U5 never draws more than 6.6 kW, and it needs a single-phase 32 amp supply to reach that. So you want a single-phase charger rated 7.4 kW. That gives the car everything its onboard charger can take.
Here is where it goes wrong for a lot of owners. A three-phase 11 kW charger delivers 3 x 16 amps. A single-phase car picks up one of those phases, so it tops out at 16 amps, or 3.7 kW. Your charging time nearly doubles. A 22 kW unit (3 x 32 amps) does return the full 6.6 kW. That is more capacity than this car uses, but it is the one route to a built-in MID meter.
Since raw speed is settled, choose on features instead. Two of them earn their place at this charging speed. An EV charger with an app lets you start, stop and schedule a session from your phone. That way you charge when electricity is cheapest. A solar EV charger runs on the surplus from your own panels, so you charge in daylight instead of drawing from the grid at night.
One thing you will not find at this power level: a built-in MID meter. That is a certified kWh meter. It logs your charging separately from the rest of the house, so you know exactly what driving costs you. In our range the MID meter is a three-phase feature, so the combination does not exist at 7.4 kW. On an 11 kW unit it would cost you speed, because the car falls back to 3.7 kW. A 22 kW unit keeps the full 6.6 kW, so that is the one to look at among the charging stations with MID meter. Fitting a separate meter next to a 7.4 kW charger works too.
Our EV home chargers bring the everyday options together, from basic units to models with app control. The Aiways U5 uses a Type 2 socket, like these chargers. You only need a separate type 2 charging cable for public charging points. At home you charge through the cable fixed to the unit.
How long does the Aiways U5 (2020-2022) take to charge?
With 60 kWh usable and 6.6 kW going in, a full charge takes about 9 hours on paper (60 divided by 6.6). In practice, count on roughly 10 hours 45 minutes, because some energy is lost as heat during charging. Plug in when you get home and the car is full by morning.
On an 11 kW three-phase charger the car falls back to 3.7 kW, which puts the same charge at about 16 hours on paper. Away from home you use the CCS socket. There the U5 takes up to 90 kW, enough to pick up useful range during a coffee stop.
Other versions and models from Aiways
Wallbox Discounter also has charging advice for the other Aiways versions and models:
We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician, because it is safer and it matters for your insurance. We arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. Outside those three countries we ship the charger to you, but you arrange fitting locally.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Aiways U5 (2020-2022) need a three-phase connection?
No, and three-phase is actually the wrong choice here. This U5 charges over a single phase and needs a 32 amp supply for its full 6.6 kW. On a three-phase 11 kW charger it drops to 3.7 kW, which almost doubles the charging time.
Why does a MID meter matter for the Aiways U5?
A MID certified kWh meter records your charging separately from your household use. That tells you precisely what a kilometre costs you at home. At 7.4 kW our range has no charger with one built in. Want it built in, choose a 22 kW unit, which still gives this car its full 6.6 kW.
Does the Aiways U5 charge faster on a 22 kW charger?
No faster than 6.6 kW, because the onboard charger sets the ceiling. A 22 kW unit does supply 3 x 32 amps, so the car reaches its full 6.6 kW there. An 11 kW unit does not, which is the difference that matters.
