The BMW 225xe Active Tourer is a plug-in hybrid with a 3.7 kW on-board charger on one phase. That is deliberately modest, because the battery is small and fills up quickly anyway. An 11 kW EV charger delivers 3x16 A, so this car still gets its full 3.7 kW. You also keep room for a faster EV later. How long does the BMW 225xe take to charge?
The sum is simple. The net 8.8 kWh divided by 3.7 kW comes out at about 2.5 hours for a full charge. Plug the car in during the evening and it stands full well in time. At an ordinary socket that takes some five hours, so a fixed EV charger halves the charging time. The 225xe has a Type 2 connection and at home you charge through the fixed connection of the charger. A separate Type 2 charging cable is only needed on the road.

Does the BMW 225xe need a three-phase EV charger?
Not for speed. The 225xe charges on one phase with a maximum of 3.7 kW, so a three-phase charger adds no charging speed. An 11 kW charger delivers 3x16 A and therefore still gives this car its full 3.7 kW. Choosing three phases makes sense if you expect a faster EV later.
Why does a MID meter matter for the 225xe?
With a MID certified kWh meter you record your home charging consumption accurately. That tells you what charging costs you, separate from the rest of your household use. Can I charge the BMW 225xe faster than 3.7 kW?
Not at home. The on-board charger of the 225xe is capped at 3.7 kW and the car does not support DC rapid charging. Whether you connect a 7.4 kW or a 22 kW charger, the charging power stays 3.7 kW. A simple EV charger is therefore always enough for this car.
