MG MG4 Electric XPOWER EV charger: which one fits best?
The MG MG4 XPOWER charges at home at a maximum of 11 kW through a Type 2 connection. This 11 kW is the upper limit: even with a more powerful 22 kW EV charger, this top-spec AWD version will not charge any faster. However, check the onboard charger of your exact version, as some XPOWER versions charge at a lower AC power. Which EV charger suits the MG MG4 Electric XPOWER?
The XPOWER charges at 11 kW at home, so an 11 kW charger matches the car exactly. Beyond that power rating, three features decide which model is right for you.
The first is a calibrated kWh meter. A charger with a built in MID meter records exactly how much energy went into the car, and that reading is what an employer or leasing company wants to see before reimbursing a charging session. Drivers in the Netherlands have a second reason to want one: a national scheme pays back up to 500 euro a year on home charging, and it only accepts a calibrated meter. That scheme is available in the Netherlands only.
The second is load balancing. Pulling the full 11 kW takes a large share of your home connection, so a fixed charging current can trip a fuse when the rest of the house is drawing power at the same time. A charger with dynamic load balancing measures what is left over and adjusts the charging power to match, so the session simply slows down instead of cutting out.
The third is app control. A full charge takes most of the night anyway, so you may as well shift it to the cheapest hours. How long does the MG MG4 Electric XPOWER take to charge?
The sum is simple: 61.7 kWh of usable battery divided by 11 kW of charging power comes out at roughly 5.5 hours. Add charging losses and you plan for about 6.5 hours in practice. Charging speed here is set by the car rather than by the wallbox on your wall, so an 11 kW unit already delivers everything the XPOWER can take. Charge overnight and the XPOWER is ready in the morning. On a single phase connection the car charges at up to 3.7 kW instead, which stretches a full charge considerably. A three phase connection is what lets you use the full 11 kW.
Does the MG MG4 Electric XPOWER need a three phase connection?
To charge at 11 kW, yes. A three phase supply is what the 11 kW onboard charger needs to reach its full power. On a single phase connection the XPOWER charges at up to 3.7 kW, which still fills the battery overnight but takes far longer. Load balancing keeps a single phase setup out of trouble by backing off when the rest of the house draws power. We always recommend having the connection made by a certified electrician, which is safer and matters for your insurance. You need one as soon as you want your charging costs reimbursed. A MID certified kWh meter is calibrated, so its reading stands up as evidence towards an employer or a leasing company. Without one you are left with an estimate, and few finance departments accept that. In the Netherlands a calibrated meter also unlocks a national scheme worth up to 500 euro a year, which applies in the Netherlands only.
Can I charge the MG MG4 Electric XPOWER faster with a 22 kW charger?
No. The XPOWER accepts a maximum of 11 kW AC at home. A 22 kW charger works perfectly well, but it still charges this car at 11 kW. An 11 kW charger is therefore the sensible choice, unless you expect a next car that can take 22 kW.
