Do you drive an electric car with a Type 1 (SAE J1772) connection? Then you will recognise the problem: almost all EV chargers and public charging points in the Netherlands have a Type 2 plug. With a charging cable type 1 to type 2, you can connect your car to any charging station without the hassle of extra adapters.

Why choose a charging cable type 1 to type 2?

All public EV chargers in the Netherlands and most home EV chargers use the Type 2 standard (Mennekes). Cars such as the Nissan Leaf (first generation), Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and Opel Ampera, however, have a Type 1 charging port. An adapter cable solves this difference: one side has a Type 1 plug (for your car), the other side has a Type 2 plug (for the EV charger).

The maximum charging capacity remains limited to what your car can handle. For most Type 1 vehicles, this is 3.7 kW (16A, 1-phase) or 7.4 kW (32A, 1-phase). The cable itself does not limit the power, as long as you choose the correct amperage.

Choosing the right adapter cable

When choosing a charging cable type 1 to type 2, pay attention to two things:

  • Power: choose 16A (3.7 kW) if your car charges at a maximum of 3.7 kW. Choose 32A (7.4 kW) if your car supports it.
  • Cable length: the standard 5-metre length is sufficient for most situations. Is your car parked further away from the charging point? Then consider a longer version.

Not sure which charging capacity your car supports? Check the specifications in your car manual or ask our customer service.
