Opel Ampera EV charger: which one fits best?

The Opel Ampera charges at up to 3.7 kW on a single phase. That suits the car. The Ampera from 2012 to 2015 is a range-extender with an 11 kWh usable battery. It is not a modern EV with high charging power. So you do not need a fast charger, but you do need a reliable one. Any modern charger fills the Ampera overnight. Not sure about your model? See our overview of all Opel EV chargers.

For the Opel Ampera we recommend a charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the Opel Ampera?

The Ampera limits charging to 3.7 kW, so the car sets the speed, not the charger. A 7.4 kW charger works fine and simply falls back to what the Ampera can take. You choose on convenience, reliability and features, not on speed. An 11 kW charger is a good option too if you want to be ready for a faster EV later.

Almost every charger we recommend has a built-in MID meter. That is a certified kWh meter, and it matters more than you might think. From 2026 in the Netherlands only, private drivers can earn back up to 500 euro per year through their energy supplier. That works only with a certified meter. A MID meter also lets you settle charging costs accurately with an employer or lease company. Compare the options among our chargers with a MID meter, or start with a simple home charger.

The Ampera has a Type 1 connection (Yazaki), while almost every charger has a Type 2 socket. You therefore need a Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable once to connect the car to the charger.

How long does the Opel Ampera take to charge?

The Ampera has an 11 kWh usable battery and charges at 3.7 kW. With a charger the car is full again in about 3 hours. Plug it in during the evening and it is ready well before morning. A normal wall socket at 2.3 kW takes a bit longer, but the difference stays small at this battery size. The Ampera does not support DC fast charging, so charging at home is the logical choice. When the battery is empty, the petrol range-extender keeps you going without charging.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Opel Ampera need a MID meter?

The car itself does not, but your charger does if you want to save. A MID meter records your charging use accurately. From 2026 in the Netherlands only, private drivers can earn back up to 500 euro per year through their energy supplier. Business drivers also need a MID meter to settle charging sessions with an employer or lease company.

Can I charge the Opel Ampera on an 11 kW charger?

Yes, without any problem. The charger never delivers more than the car can take, so the Ampera charges at 3.7 kW. You do not pay for speed you cannot use. You keep a future-proof charger for when you switch to a faster EV.

Should I have the charger installed?

We install EV chargers in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. We always recommend a certified installer for the connection to your fuse box. It is safer and important for your insurance. Shipping is worldwide, but the installation service covers those three countries only.
