Smart EV charger: which model suits your car?
A smart always charges at home with alternating current (AC), but the charging power differs a lot per model. The older EQ fortwo and forfour charge at 4.6 kW as standard and had an optional 22 kW fast charger. The new smart #1 and #3 charge at 7.4 kW (single phase) up to 22 kW (three phase), depending on the version. The Pro and Pro+ entry versions reach 7.4 kW; the Premium and Brabus versions reach the full 22 kW. Which EV charger fits best therefore depends on your exact model and version. Which EV charger suits a smart?
Do you drive a smart #1 or #3 Premium or Brabus? Then you get the most from a three-phase EV charger, because those versions charge at up to 22 kW. The Pro and Pro+ entry versions charge at 7.4 kW, for which an 11 kW EV charger is more than enough. For an EQ fortwo or forfour without the 22 kW option, an 11 kW charger is also plenty: the car then charges at its own maximum and you are ready for a faster EV later.
It is worth choosing a charger with a built-in MID meter, a certified kWh meter that records your charging accurately. From 2026 in the Netherlands only, private drivers can earn back around 10 cents per kWh charged at home, but a calibrated meter is required for that. What charging power do most smart cars have?
That depends on the generation and version. The older EQ fortwo and forfour charge at 4.6 kW as standard and were available with an optional 22 kW fast charger. On the new smart #1 and #3, the Pro and Pro+ entry versions charge at 7.4 kW, while the Premium and Brabus versions charge at up to 22 kW over a three-phase connection. The smartest approach is to choose your charger based on the charging power of your specific model and your connection at home.
Do smart cars need an EV charger with a MID meter?
We strongly recommend it. With a built-in MID meter you record your charging accurately, and from 2026 in the Netherlands only you can earn back around 10 cents per kWh charged at home. Without a calibrated kWh meter you miss that benefit. It is worth choosing a smart charger that has a MID meter for that reason.
