The smart ForTwo and ForFour Electric Drive are compact city cars. At home they charge at up to 4.6 kW on a single phase, so one live wire from your meter box. That has a pleasant upside for your charger choice. A heavier charger does not charge this smart any faster, so you never pay for power the car cannot use. Which charger fits the smart ForTwo and ForFour Electric Drive?
Because this smart stays at 4.6 kW single-phase, every home charger gives you the same speed. So you choose mainly on features. A MID meter, a certified kWh meter, is worth the attention. From 2026, this pays off in the Netherlands only. Through the Dutch ERE scheme, private drivers there can earn back around 10 cents per kWh they charge at home. This works only with a certified meter.
One thing to know: at 7.4 kW there is no charger with a built-in MID meter yet. Our chargers with a MID meter start at 11 kW. Does that certified meter matter to you, or do you want to be ready for a faster future EV? Then step up to an 11 kW charger. The smart itself would then charge single-phase, so a bit slower than on a 7.4 kW charger.
The smart uses a Type 2 connection, like most chargers. You only need a matching Type 2 charging cable when you want to charge at a public point on the road.
How long does the smart ForTwo and ForFour Electric Drive take to charge?
The sum is simple. On paper, the usable 16.7 kWh battery at 4.6 kW fills an empty battery in about 3.5 hours. In practice, counting charging losses, a full charge takes around 4.5 hours. A heavier charger changes nothing here, because the car sets the maximum, not the charger. For daily city use you charge overnight, and 4.5 hours is plenty to start every morning full.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a three-phase connection for the smart Electric Drive?
No. The smart charges single-phase at 4.6 kW, and any meter box handles that, even a single-phase connection. A three-phase charger only helps if you plan a future EV that charges faster. We always recommend having the connection done by a certified installer, which is safer and matters for your insurance. Why is a MID meter important for my smart?
A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that records exactly how much you charge at home. In the Netherlands only, from 2026 private drivers can earn back around 10 cents per kWh through the Dutch ERE scheme. Good to know: at 7.4 kW no charger has a built-in meter yet. A MID meter therefore means stepping up to 11 kW.
