Why a Tesla EV charger also works for other EVs

A Tesla EV charger is not a Tesla-only product. The Wall Connector Gen 3 has a universal Type 2 connector. This allows you to charge any electric car sold in Europe, from a Volkswagen ID.4 to a Hyundai IONIQ 5 or Kia EV6. Tesla drivers do benefit from Plug & Charge: plug in the cable and charging starts automatically, without an app or charging card. Plug & Charge works on the basis of ISO 15118, the communication standard between car and EV charger. This standard is also the basis for future smart grid and V2G functions, so the Wall Connector Gen 3 is prepared for what comes next.

The fixed 7.3-metre cable gives you plenty of flexibility on your driveway or in the garage. This means you do not always have to park your car in exactly the same place to charge comfortably.

Choose Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 or Gen 3 MID?

Tesla offers the Wall Connector in two versions. Both deliver up to 22 kW on a three-phase connection; the difference lies in the built-in kWh meter and suitability for ERE certificates in the Netherlands.

Suitable forPrivate home chargersBusiness drivers and lease cars

Do you drive privately and simply want to charge quickly and reliably at home? Then the standard version is the logical choice. Do you drive for business, in a lease car, or do you want to settle charging costs or apply for ERE certificates in the Netherlands? Then choose the MID version.

How does dynamic load balancing work with the Neurio meter?

The Tesla Wall Connector itself does not have built-in load balancing. Tesla solves this with a separate Neurio meter that is installed in the electrical cabinet. This meter continuously measures how much power your home is using at that moment and passes that information on to the EV charger via a Modbus connection.

Are the washing machine, oven and dishwasher running at the same time? Then the Wall Connector automatically reduces its charging power, so your main fuse is not overloaded. When capacity becomes available again, it increases the power again. This prevents your circuit from tripping without you having to do anything. For anyone who really wants to get the most out of a 22 kW EV charger, the Neurio meter is a valuable addition.

22 kW charging with the Wall Connector: how fast is it?

With 22 kW, you can fully charge a 60 kWh battery in around three hours. An 80 kWh battery takes just under four hours. You only achieve this speed on a three-phase connection of 3x32A. Do you have single-phase power or 11 kW available? No problem: the Wall Connector automatically switches back to the available power.

The car itself determines how much power it accepts. A Tesla Model Y Long Range charges at home at up to 11 kW, while a Tesla Model S with dual charger option can use the full 22 kW. So always check the specifications of your own car before investing in a 22 kW charger.

Tesla app: schedule and monitor charging

The Wall Connector connects to the Tesla app via Wi-Fi. In the app, you can set charging schedules for off-peak hours, view your consumption per session and receive notifications when charging is complete. Combine this with a dynamic energy contract and you charge during the hours when electricity is cheapest, without having to keep an eye on it yourself.

ERE certificates: earn back on every charged kWh

With the MID version of the Wall Connector, you can apply for ERE certificates in the Netherlands. ERE stands for emission reduction units, certificates from the Dutch Emissions Authority that allow you to receive compensation for every kWh you charge into your electric car at home. Registration must be completed before May 2026 and the compensation applies retroactively (source: Pure Energie). Please note: this ERE scheme only applies in the Netherlands.

The condition is that your EV charger has a certified MID meter. The Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3 MID meets this requirement. For lease cars or business drivers in the Netherlands, the ERE compensation can be added on top of any mileage allowance, so for many drivers the additional cost of the MID version can quickly pay for itself.

Installation of the Tesla Wall Connector

A 22 kW EV charger requires a separate three-phase group with the correct residual current circuit breaker and cable thickness. Always have the installation carried out by a certified installer. Wallbox Discounter offers installation by a certified installer, so your charger is connected safely and correctly.

Do you have your own electrician? No problem. The Tesla Wall Connector is supplied with Tesla’s official installation manual, plus all required mounting brackets. If you prefer charging without a fixed cable, or want an extra Type 2 charging cable, you will find a wide range in our webshop.

Frequently asked questions about the Tesla EV charger

Can I also charge a non-Tesla with a Tesla Wall Connector?

Yes, the Gen 3 has a universal Type 2 connector and works with every electric car sold in Europe. Plug & Charge only works with Tesla models; other cars start charging just like with any other EV charger.

Is the Tesla Wall Connector suitable for ERE certificates?

Only the Gen 3 MID version. It has a certified MID meter on board, which is a legal requirement for applying for ERE certificates or settling charging costs for business use. Please note: ERE certificates only apply in the Netherlands.

Do I need a Neurio meter?

Not mandatory, but recommended if your electrical cabinet has limited capacity or if you often use multiple high-power appliances at the same time. Without the Neurio meter, the Wall Connector charges at a fixed maximum setting. With the meter, it dynamically adapts to your actual consumption.

Does the Tesla EV charger also work on a single-phase connection?

Yes, the Wall Connector automatically detects your connection and then delivers up to 7.4 kW. For the full 22 kW, you need a three-phase connection and a car that also accepts that power.
