DS 3 Crossback E-Tense EV charger: which one fits best?

The DS 3 Crossback E-Tense charges at home at 7.4 kW on a single-phase supply. Single-phase means the charger uses one live wire of your fuse box, at 32 A. An optional 11 kW three-phase charger was available when the car was new. Three-phase uses all three live wires of your fuse box instead of one. That option decides which charger suits you, so check it before you order. Our DS EV charger overview gives the advice for every electric DS model.

For the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense we recommend a charger from our 7.4 kW EV chargers.

Did your car leave the factory with the optional 11 kW three-phase charger? Then an 11 kW EV charger delivers the full 11 kW and fills the battery in about 5 hours. The three-phase charger cost extra, so not every car has it. Your original order form, the invoice or your DS dealer can confirm it.

Which EV charger suits the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense?

A single-phase 32 A charger gives a standard DS 3 Crossback E-Tense its full 7.4 kW. The battery is then full in about 7.5 hours, charging losses included. Plug in after dinner and you drive off with a full battery the next morning.

A three-phase 11 kW charger looks like a step up, but it is not. Three-phase means the charger uses all three live wires, here at 16 A each. A standard car takes just one of those phases. It then charges at 3.7 kW and needs about 14.75 hours. So an 11 kW charger halves the charging speed of this car.

A 22 kW EV charger supplies 3 x 32 A, so the car keeps its full 7.4 kW. It charges no faster than a 7.4 kW model, but it does open up one extra feature. A 22 kW charger needs a three-phase 32 A supply at your fuse box, so check that first.

That feature is the MID meter: an officially calibrated kWh meter built into the charger. No 7.4 kW model in our range has one. At 11 kW you will find it on just a single model. Almost every charger that does have one is a 22 kW model, on a three-phase 32 A supply.

A calibrated meter records what you charge at home separately from your household use. You therefore know what charging your car costs, down to the kWh. App control is a separate matter: our EV chargers with an app run at 7.4, 11 and 22 kW. You set charging times and follow every session on your phone.

We recommend having your home charger connected by a qualified electrician, for your own safety and for your insurer. Wallbox Discounter arranges installation in the Netherlands, Belgium (Flemish region) and Germany. We ship worldwide, so ask your own electrician for a quote outside those three countries.

How long does it take to charge the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense?

With the standard 7.4 kW on-board charger the 46.3 kWh net battery is full in about 7.5 hours, charging losses included. A single-phase 16 A point halves that power to 3.7 kW, which stretches the same charge to roughly 14.75 hours. With the optional 11 kW charger you are done in about 5 hours. On the road a 100 kW fast charger takes the battery from 0 to 80% in about 30 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a three-phase connection for the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense?

Not for the standard car. It reaches its full 7.4 kW on a single-phase 32 A supply. Three-phase only pays off if your car has the optional 11 kW charger. On a three-phase 11 kW charger a standard car drops to 3.7 kW, because it uses one phase at 16 A. A 22 kW charger does keep the full 7.4 kW, but it needs a three-phase 32 A supply.

Do I need an EV charger with a MID meter?

Only if you want to know exactly what home charging costs you. A MID meter is a calibrated kWh meter that counts your charging sessions separately from your household use. It is useful for private drivers as well as company drivers. Do bear in mind where the feature sits. No 7.4 kW charger in our range has one. Almost every charger that has one is a 22 kW model. That needs a three-phase 32 A supply at your fuse box.
