Tesla Model S 100D EV charger: which one fits best?
The Tesla Model S 100D has a large 100 kWh battery and charges at 11 kW on a 3 x 16 A three-phase connection. That makes the choice simple: for most drivers, an 11 kW EV charger is the smartest option. Does your 100D have the 16.5 kW on-board charger? Then it can charge at up to 16.5 kW on a connection of at least 3 x 25 A. The other battery versions are covered in our Tesla Model S EV charger overview, and every Tesla model in our overview of Tesla EV chargers.
For the Tesla Model S 100D we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers. If your car has the 16.5 kW on-board charger and your connection allows it, a 22 kW charger lets it charge faster. The charging menu on the touchscreen or your vehicle documents show which on-board charger your car has.

Which EV charger suits the Tesla Model S 100D?
On a 3 x 16 A three-phase connection, an 11 kW charger gives the 100D 11 kW, enough to fill it overnight. Think about a built-in MID meter as well: a calibrated kWh meter that records your home charging separately from the rest of your household, so you know exactly what charging costs. At 11 kW the choice of EV chargers with a MID meter is small in our range; in the 22 kW range you will find many more models with a built-in MID meter.
You usually plug the car in during the evening, when other appliances in your home also draw power. Dynamic load balancing helps here: the charger measures how much power your home is using and lowers the charging power when needed, so your main fuse does not trip. You can compare chargers with a MID meter and load balancing side by side in our EV home chargers.
Do you have a 100D with the 16.5 kW on-board charger and a connection of at least 3 x 25 A? Then take a look at our 22 kW EV chargers, which let the car charge at up to 16.5 kW. For most households, an 11 kW charger is the practical sweet spot.
Always have the connection made by a qualified electrician, as that is safer and matters for your insurance. We arrange the installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany; in Germany this works via a free quotation.
How long does the Tesla Model S 100D take to charge?
With an 11 kW charger, the 95 kWh battery goes from empty to full in about 10.5 hours, including charging losses. Plug in the Model S 100D when you get home in the evening and it is full by the morning, without any planning. With a 22 kW charger, a 100D with the 16.5 kW on-board charger charges at up to 16.5 kW and the charging time drops to about 7 hours. On the road, the 100D charges quickly on the Supercharger network at up to 145 kW DC.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Tesla Model S 100D need a three-phase connection?
Yes, to charge at 11 kW you need a three-phase connection with 3 x 16 A at home. On a single-phase connection the 100D charges at up to 7.4 kW on a 32 A circuit, or 3.7 kW on a 16 A circuit, so the large 95 kWh battery takes much longer to fill. If you only have single phase, a qualified electrician can tell you whether a three-phase connection is possible at your home.
Can the Model S 100D charge faster than 11 kW?
Yes, if the car has the 16.5 kW on-board charger. It then charges at up to 16.5 kW, which needs a 22 kW charger and a connection of at least 3 x 25 A. In daily use 11 kW is plenty, because the car has all night to charge. The Model S 100D uses a Type 2 connection; with a home charger that has a fixed cable, you only need a matching Type 2 charging cable for public charge points.
Why is a MID meter useful for the Tesla Model S 100D?
A built-in MID meter records exactly how much electricity you charge at home, separate from your household consumption. That way you always know what charging the 100D costs you. If you charge a company or lease car at home, the certified reading is also a reliable basis for reimbursement by your employer or leasing company.
