Which EV charger suits the Renault Megane E-Tech EV40?

The standard on-board charger, the charger built into the car, draws 32 amps on a single phase. A 7.4 kW charger therefore gives you the full speed. Watch out with an 11 kW EV charger. That model delivers 3 x 16 amps, so a single-phase car takes only 16 amps. In practice that works out at 3.7 kW, which is half your charging speed. A 22 kW charger supplies 32 amps per phase, so the standard version reaches its full 7.4 kW there as well.

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter that records exactly how much electricity you charge. It keeps your charging at home apart from the rest of your household use. That way you see what a full battery really costs. Our 7.4 kW models do not have that meter built in. In our range it starts at 11 kW, under EV chargers with a MID meter. For the EV40 a 22 kW model is the better match there. It gives you the calibrated meter and still charges at your full 7.4 kW.

Do you want to start and schedule your charging sessions from your phone? Some models in the 7.4 kW category have their own app. The filter under EV chargers with an app shows which ones.

Our home EV chargers bring together the models most people install at home, which makes it a practical place to start comparing.

How long does the Renault Megane E-Tech EV40 take to charge?

The sum is simple: divide the usable battery of 40 kWh by the charging power. With the standard 7.4 kW on-board charger you fill an almost empty battery in about 5.5 hours. That fits comfortably within one night. With the boost charge of 22 kW and a matching three-phase connection a full charge takes about 2 hours.

In practice you rarely charge from 0 to 100 percent, so topping up for a few hours usually covers your daily trips. On the road the EV40 fast charges at a DC station at up to 85 kW.

The EV40 uses a Type 2 connection for charging at home. Do you also want to charge at a public charging point or at a friend's house? Then you need a separate Type 2 charging cable. At home you simply charge through the fixed connection of your charger.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Renault Megane E-Tech EV40 need a three-phase connection?

No. For the standard version with a 7.4 kW on-board charger, a single-phase connection of 32 amps is enough. You only need a three-phase connection of 32 amps if you want to use the boost charge of 22 kW in full. We always recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician. That is safer and it matters for your insurance. Wallbox Discounter arranges EV charger installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. In Germany that runs through a free quote rather than a bookable product. Shipping goes worldwide, installation does not.

Why does a MID meter matter for the EV40?

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter, so every kilowatt hour you charge is measured to a European standard. That lets you keep your charging costs apart from the rest of your electricity bill. You then know what a full battery really costs you. The 7.4 kW models in our range do not have such a meter on board. It starts at 11 kW, so weigh it against the charging speed your version can actually use.
