Which EV charger suits the Subaru Solterra?
At home, you charge with alternating current (AC) over one or more phases. A phase is one of the live conductors in your electrical connection. The Solterra uses one phase regardless of what you connect it to and draws up to 6.6 kW. A 7.4 kW charger therefore makes full use of the car's AC charging capability.
A three-phase 11 kW EV charger supplies 16 A per phase, and the Solterra uses only one of the three. It then charges at about 3.7 kW and takes roughly twice as long. Two features are worth considering at this power level. A charger with an app lets you set charging times and monitor a session from your phone. If you have solar panels, a solar EV charger can use your own surplus solar energy to charge the car.
A MID-certified kWh meter is a certified meter built into the charger. It records exactly how much electricity is used for charging at home, separately from the rest of your household consumption. The Solterra has a Type 2 connection, like our EV chargers. A separate Type 2 charging cable is needed if your home charger has a socket instead of a fixed cable, or when charging at public charge points without a tethered cable. How long does the Subaru Solterra take to charge?
Around 64 kWh of usable battery capacity divided by 6.6 kW gives roughly 10 hours of theoretical charging time. Because some energy is lost during charging, a full charge takes about 11.5 hours in practice. Plug the Solterra in overnight and it can be full again by the morning.
Most days, the battery will not be completely empty, so a partial overnight charge is usually enough. Running a heat pump or induction hob at the same time? Then consider a charger with dynamic load balancing. It automatically reduces charging power when necessary to help prevent overloading your main electrical connection, and this feature is available on both single-phase and three-phase models.
Charging the Subaru Solterra at home: what to watch for
The Solterra is closely related to the Toyota bZ4X. It does not support Plug & Charge via ISO 15118. This standard allows a car to authenticate itself automatically at a compatible charging station. Instead, you start a charging session with a charge card or through your charger's app.

Do I need an EV charger with a MID meter for the Subaru Solterra?
