Kia Niro EV charger: which one fits best?

The Kia Niro EV from 2022 charges at home at 11 kW. That runs over a three-phase connection: three live wires instead of one. That is an advantage in this class. Many rivals in this class charge single-phase, while the Niro EV uses the full power of an 11 kW charger. Mind the difference with the older e-Niro, which has its own page. Browse our overview of every Kia EV charger option as well.

For the Kia Niro EV we recommend a charger from our 11 kW EV chargers.

A 22 kW charger will not charge this Kia any faster, because the on-board charger caps at 11 kW. It is not slower either. For 22 kW you do need a three-phase 32 A supply at home.

Which EV charger suits the Kia Niro EV?

The Niro EV takes 11 kW AC as standard. So the best home charger for the Kia Niro EV is an 11 kW model. You charge the car overnight and drive off with a full battery. The car takes a Type 2 plug, also called Mennekes. That is the connector type on every charger in the range. Every model in that range plugs straight in.

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter built into the charger. It measures the electricity you charge at home separately from your household use, so you know exactly what charging costs. At 11 kW our choice with such a meter is narrow: just one model carries one. Most of our EV chargers with a MID meter sit at 22 kW.

That costs this Kia nothing, because it keeps its full 11 kW on a 22 kW EV charger. Remember the condition: 22 kW asks for a three-phase 32 A supply. At 7.4, 11 and 22 kW you can pick an EV charger with an app. You then start, stop and follow a session from your phone.

Browse all 11 kW EV chargers in our range. We recommend having the connection made by a qualified electrician, which is safer and matters for your insurance. Wallbox Discounter arranges installation in the Netherlands, Belgium (Flanders) and Germany. We ship worldwide, but installation stays inside those three countries.

How long does the Kia Niro EV take to charge?

With an 11 kW charger the 64.8 kWh battery is full again in about 7 hours, charging losses included. Plug in around 23:00 and you leave with a full battery in the morning.

Charging single-phase takes longer. On a 7.4 kW EV charger with 32 A the same battery needs about 10.5 hours. A single-phase 16 A point gives 3.7 kW, and then you need about 21 hours. On the road a CCS fast charger helps. CCS is the plug standard for DC fast charging that this Kia uses. The Niro EV takes up to 80 kW DC, which brings it from 10 to 80% in about 45 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Kia Niro EV need a three-phase connection?

For the full 11 kW you do. Three-phase means three live wires coming into your fuse box instead of one. Without it the Niro EV still charges, only slower: about 7.4 kW on a single-phase 32 A charger. An 11 kW charger also works on a single-phase supply, but then it delivers 3.7 kW. That still makes it a sound buy if you plan to move to three phases later.

Do I need a charger with a MID meter?

You do not need one to charge your Kia. A MID meter is worth it if you want to know what home charging costs you. The certified meter counts your charging sessions apart from the rest of your electricity use, down to the kWh. At 11 kW the choice with a certified meter is narrow, so most buyers who want one end up at 22 kW. Your Niro EV keeps its full 11 kW there. You do need a three-phase 32 A supply for it.
