The Ford Explorer Extended Range RWD is the most efficient version of the electric Explorer, offering a WLTP range of up to 602 kilometres from a net battery capacity of 79 kWh. At home, it charges through its onboard charger at a maximum of 11 kW AC. This determines which EV charger is the logical choice: an 11 kW home charger fully utilises the maximum AC charging power of this car, while faster charging takes place at a DC fast charger while travelling. Which EV charger is suitable for the Ford Explorer Extended Range RWD?
With an 11 kW onboard charger, this Explorer does not require a 22 kW EV charger to charge more quickly at home: the car cannot utilise the additional charging power. An 11 kW wallbox connected to a three-phase electrical supply is therefore the most sensible choice. In addition to charging power, consider functions such as dynamic load balancing, app control and an integrated MID meter. A MID meter accurately and verifiably records the charged kilowatt-hours. This is especially useful for employer or leasing-company reimbursement and business charging. In the Netherlands, a MID meter may also be required for ERE registration. The ERE scheme applies exclusively in the Netherlands and is not available in other countries.

How long does it take to charge the Ford Explorer Extended Range RWD?
The net 79 kWh battery can be fully charged in approximately seven hours using an 11 kW wallbox. This adds approximately 50 to 60 kilometres of driving range per hour. If you connect the car in the evening, it will be fully charged the following morning, even after a day covering many kilometres. Charging is faster while travelling: at a DC fast charger, the Explorer accepts up to 185 kW, allowing the battery to be charged from 10 to 80 percent in just over half an hour.
Does the Ford Explorer Extended Range RWD require a three-phase connection?
To achieve the full 11 kW, you need a three-phase connection of 3 × 16 amps at home. If you only have a single-phase connection, the charging power is reduced to 3.7 kW. The Explorer uses a Type 2 connection, just like the EV chargers we recommend, so you connect the car directly to the fixed cable or socket of the charger. We always recommend having the installation carried out by a certified installer, as this is safer and may be important for your insurance coverage.

Does the recommended EV charger have a MID meter?
The Easee Charge Up does not have an integrated MID meter. The Zaptec Go 2 does have an integrated MID-certified kWh meter, allowing you to accurately and verifiably record your consumption for employer or leasing-company reimbursement. In the Netherlands, it may also be used for ERE registration. The ERE scheme applies exclusively in the Netherlands. The Besen 11 kW does not have an integrated MID meter either.
Can I charge the Ford Explorer Extended Range RWD at more than 11 kW at home?
No. The onboard charger of this Explorer accepts a maximum of 11 kW AC at home. A 22 kW EV charger will therefore not charge the car any faster at home. Faster charging is only possible while travelling at a DC fast charger, at up to 185 kW.
