Renault Twingo Electric EV charger: which one suits it best?

The Renault Twingo Electric (2020 to 2024) is a compact city car that charges remarkably fast at home. Its Caméléon on-board charger accepts up to 22 kW of alternating current (AC). Most electric cars stop at 11 kW. DC fast charging is not available on this Twingo, so your home charger does all the work. To use the full 22 kW you need a three-phase connection with 32 amps per phase. Renault sells several electric models, and each one has its own advice in our overview of Renault EV chargers.

For the Renault Twingo Electric we recommend a charger from our 22 kW EV chargers.

Which EV charger suits the Renault Twingo Electric?

Which wallbox suits your Twingo depends mainly on the connection in your home. The Twingo Electric reaches 22 kW, but only on three phases with 32 amps per phase. With that connection the battery is full again in about an hour and a half. Do you have a single-phase connection? Then a 7.4 kW EV charger is your ceiling, and a full charge takes roughly four hours.

For most electric cars a heavier charger adds nothing, because the car itself caps the power. This Twingo is the exception. An 11 kW EV charger gives 16 amps per phase, so the car charges at about half the speed. In practice that is roughly an hour and a half against nearly three hours. A heavier charger really does charge this car faster.

One point of caution before you choose. Renault unveiled a new Twingo E-Tech at the end of 2025, on sale from 2026. That is a different car with different charging behaviour. The advice here applies to the Twingo Electric built from 2020 to 2024.

Many 22 kW chargers come with a MID meter built in. That is a certified kWh meter built into the charger, so the reading counts as an official measurement. It records the electricity you put in the car separately from your household use. You therefore know exactly what a charging session costs you. Most of our EV chargers with a MID meter are 22 kW models, which fits this Twingo well.

Load balancing is the second feature worth having here. It is a function that lowers the charging power when the rest of your home draws a lot of current. The Twingo pulls 32 amps per phase at full power, so your fuse box needs that headroom. Our EV chargers with dynamic load balancing keep the main fuse from tripping.

You will find a wide choice of suitable models in our home EV chargers range. We arrange installation in the Netherlands, Flemish Belgium and Germany. Shipping is worldwide. Wherever you live, we recommend having a qualified electrician make the connection. That is safer, and it matters for your insurance. Check which rules apply in your own country.

How long does charging a Renault Twingo Electric take?

The sum is simple: divide the usable battery by the charging power. That is the theoretical minimum. In practice count on thirty to fifty percent more: some energy is lost, and the last part of the charge slows down. The pack holds 21.4 kWh of usable capacity. On a 22 kW charger that means about an hour and a half. On 11 kW you need close to three hours, and on 7.4 kW about four hours. In daily use you rarely start from empty, because the range is short and the trips are mostly urban.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Renault Twingo Electric need a three-phase connection?

Only if you want the full 22 kW. With three phases and 32 amps per phase the Twingo is full in about an hour and a half. On a single-phase connection you charge at 7.4 kW, which takes roughly four hours. Three-phase is standard in many homes in continental Europe and unusual in others, so check your fuse box first. For a city car that charges overnight, that is usually enough.

Can the Renault Twingo Electric fast charge on DC?

No. The Twingo Electric built from 2020 to 2024 has no DC connection and charges on alternating current only. That makes a good AC charger at home more important than it is for most electric cars. The car uses a Type 2 port, the same connector almost every home charger works with.

Do I need an EV charger with a MID meter?

You are not obliged to have one, but it is genuinely useful. A MID meter is a certified kWh meter inside the charger. It measures your charging separately from the rest of your household consumption, so you can see what each session costs. At 22 kW a MID meter is common, while at lower charging powers it is rare.
