The iOn is a compact city car with a usable battery of 14.5 kWh, built on the technology of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV. For your choice of charger that matters: you do not need a heavy model. Which EV charger suits the Peugeot iOn?

Because the iOn never charges faster than 3.7 kW, a simple single-phase unit is technically enough. A heavier 11 kW or 22 kW model will not charge this car a minute quicker. The car sets the ceiling, not the charger. An 11 kW charger is still the smarter buy if a larger EV is on your horizon. That car can use the extra capacity straight away.

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter which records your charging separately from the rest of your household. It turns charging into a figure you can read, instead of an unexplained rise on your energy bill.

How long does the Peugeot iOn take to charge?

With a 3.7 kW charger the 14.5 kWh battery is full again in about four hours. Plug the car into an ordinary household socket instead and it charges at 2.3 kW, which takes around 7.5 hours once charging losses are counted. For a city car with this range that difference is small. Connect the iOn in the evening and you drive off with a full battery in the morning. A portable unit is therefore a perfectly good and affordable option here, and you will find them among our mobile EV chargers.

Worth knowing: the Peugeot iOn uses a Type 1 (Yazaki) connection. Most home chargers have a fixed Type 2 socket. To connect the car, you need a Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable.

Does the Peugeot iOn need a three-phase EV charger?

No. The iOn charges on a single phase at a maximum of 3.7 kW, so a single-phase charger covers it. Whether your home can supply that depends on your own grid connection, which an electrician can confirm. A three-phase 11 kW charger works fine, but it does not make this car any faster.

Why does a MID meter matter for the iOn?

A MID meter is a certified kWh meter inside the charger. It records exactly how much electricity your car takes at home, apart from your other household use. With a battery this small every kilowatt-hour is visible, so you quickly see what a full charge actually costs you.

Should I have the charger installed?

We always recommend having the connection made by a certified electrician. It is safer and it matters for your insurance.
