Volkswagen e-Up! Gen 2 EV charger: which one is the best fit?

The Volkswagen e-Up! Gen 2, produced from 2020 to 2023, received a considerably larger 36.8 kWh battery and almost twice the driving range of the first e-Up!. This compact city car charges at home at a maximum of 7.2 kW through its Type 2 connection. An 11 kW EV charger can reliably provide the power required by the car, although the vehicle itself limits the actual charging speed to 7.2 kW. Which EV charger is suitable for the Volkswagen e-Up! Gen 2?

The e-Up! Gen 2 charges at home at a maximum of 7.2 kW. An 11 kW EV charger is a future-proof choice: it can provide the full charging capacity required by the car and is also suitable for many future electric vehicles. However, the e-Up! will not charge at more than 7.2 kW at home, so a 22 kW charger does not provide an additional charging-speed advantage for this car. Almost all the EV chargers recommended below have an integrated MID meter. This accurately and verifiably records charging consumption, for example for reimbursement by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible EV charger with a MID meter may also support ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands.

How long does it take to charge the Volkswagen e-Up! Gen 2?

With an EV charger that provides the full 7.2 kW charging capacity, the usable 32.3 kWh battery can theoretically be charged from empty to full in approximately five hours. In practice, normal charging losses may make the session slightly longer. Connect the car in the evening and it will be fully charged again the following morning. The onboard charger limits the AC charging power to 7.2 kW, so a more powerful EV charger will not reduce the charging time of this vehicle. During a journey, the e-Up! supports DC fast charging at up to 40 kW. It uses a Type 2 connection for AC charging. At a public charging station or an EV charger with a Type 2 socket, you need a separate Type 2 charging cable.
