Smart EQ fortwo cabrio EV charger: which one is the best fit?
The smart EQ fortwo cabrio can charge at home at a maximum of 4.6 kW in its standard configuration. It is a compact city car with a 17.6 kWh battery, so a more powerful EV charger will not charge this version any faster. Some vehicles are equipped with the optional 22 kW onboard charger and can benefit from a more powerful charger. Which EV charger is suitable for the smart EQ fortwo cabrio?
Do you have the standard version with the 4.6 kW onboard charger? In that case, the car will never charge faster than 4.6 kW, regardless of whether the EV charger can provide 7.4, 11 or 22 kW. A 7.4 kW EV charger on a single-phase connection is therefore more than sufficient. If your car has the optional 22 kW onboard charger, you can make full use of a 22 kW EV charger on a three-phase connection. When you need an accurate and verifiable record of the electricity used for charging, for example for reimbursement by an employer, leasing company or your own business, choose an EV charger with an integrated MID meter.

The smart EQ fortwo cabrio uses a Type 2 charging connection, just like almost all modern EV chargers. At home, you can charge using the fixed cable or socket on the charger. How long does it take to charge the smart EQ fortwo cabrio?
With the standard 4.6 kW onboard charger, an almost empty battery can be fully charged in approximately 4.5 hours, even when your EV charger can provide more power. Overnight charging at home is therefore not a problem. Does your car have the optional 22 kW onboard charger and a three-phase connection? Charging will then take approximately two hours at 11 kW and around one hour using a full 22 kW EV charger. DC fast charging is not available for this cabrio.
Do I have the standard or optional 22 kW onboard charger?
Most vehicles are equipped with the standard 4.6 kW onboard charger. The 22 kW fast onboard charger was a factory option at an additional cost and was included as standard in some countries. Not sure which version you have? Check the charging specifications in the vehicle manual or ask your dealer. For the standard version, suitable energy measurement is often more important than a particularly high charging power.

Does the smart EQ fortwo cabrio need a three-phase EV charger?
No. For the standard version with the 4.6 kW onboard charger, a single-phase 7.4 kW EV charger is more than sufficient. A three-phase connection with an 11 or 22 kW EV charger is only worthwhile when your car has the optional 22 kW onboard charger and you want to charge it more quickly.
Why can a MID meter be important for this car?
A MID meter accurately and verifiably records the electricity used during charging. This is particularly important when charging costs are reimbursed by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible charger with a MID meter may also be used for ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands. For the efficient standard version of the smart EQ fortwo cabrio, suitable energy measurement is often more important than a particularly high charging power.
