ISO 15118 is the communication standard that allows your car and EV charger to communicate with each other. This makes Plug & Charge possible. Simply plug in the charging cable and charging starts automatically, without a charging card or app. At Wallbox Discounter, you can find ISO 15118 EV chargers from Easee, Zaptec, Peblar, Smappee, Tesla and Wallbox.

From 1 January 2027, ISO 15118-20 is mandatory

The European AFIR regulation requires at least ISO 15118-20. This applies to charging points that are newly installed or renovated from 1 January 2027. The requirement also applies to private charging points at home, not only to public charging stations. If you buy an EV charger that already supports ISO 15118-20, you are immediately prepared.

What Plug & Charge changes in practice

Your car sends a digital certificate to the EV charger through the charging cable. The charger verifies the certificate and starts the charging session. No charging card that you can lose and no app that requires you to log in first. When charging on the road, payment is subsequently processed through your charging contract.

Which version do you need: ISO 15118-2 or ISO 15118-20?

VersionWhat it enablesWho is it for?
ISO 15118-2Plug & Charge and secure communicationAnyone who wants to charge without a card or app
ISO 15118-20Bidirectional charging and enhanced securityAnyone who wants to feed energy back or prepare for the future

The versions do not exclude each other. An EV charger can use ISO 15118-2 for Plug & Charge while also being prepared for ISO 15118-20. If you want to feed energy back, look for a bidirectional EV charger that supports ISO 15118-20.

Also check the MID meter

Most EV chargers in this category have an integrated MID-certified kWh meter. This accurately records how much electricity is charged through the EV charger. In the Netherlands, this is also relevant for ERE registration through an authorised registration service provider. This can generate a financial return on electricity charged at home. The ERE scheme is only available in the Netherlands. A MID meter is also useful for company cars and lease vehicles when home charging costs need to be reimbursed. Always check whether the EV charger has an integrated MID meter before making your choice.

Buy separately or including installation

You decide: order only the EV charger or choose a package including installation. Wallbox Discounter does not carry out the installation itself, but the work is completed by an approved installation partner. Having the charger connected by a qualified installer is not always legally required, but we strongly recommend it. It is safer and can also be important for your insurance coverage.

Frequently asked questions about ISO 15118 EV chargers

Does Plug & Charge work with every electric car?

No. Your car must support ISO 15118 and have a valid digital certificate. Models from manufacturers including Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi, BMW and Volkswagen already support this functionality.

Do I need to replace my current EV charger before 2027?

No. The requirement only applies to charging points that are newly installed or renovated from 1 January 2027.

Does every ISO 15118 EV charger also have a MID meter?

No. ISO 15118 concerns communication between the car and EV charger, while a MID meter is used for certified measurement of electricity consumption. Check each model individually to see whether a MID meter is integrated.
