Chevrolet Spark EV charger: which one is the best fit?
The Chevrolet Spark EV charges at home at a maximum of 3.7 kW AC. This modest charging capacity determines which EV charger is suitable for the car. A more powerful charger will not charge the Spark EV any faster, but it can be a future-proof choice for your next electric car. The Spark EV is a rare sight in Europe: it was only sold in selected markets and production ended in 2016. View our overview of all Chevrolet EV chargers for other models.
For the Chevrolet Spark EV, we recommend choosing a charger from our range of 11 kW EV chargers.
Charging specifications of the Chevrolet Spark EV
| Specification | Value |
|---|---|
| Usable battery capacity | 21 kWh |
| Maximum AC charging power at home | 3.7 kW (single-phase) |
| Charging time with an EV charger | approx. 6 hours |
| Charging connector | Type 1 (Yazaki) |
Because the Spark EV has a Type 1 charging port, you need a suitable cable for use with a modern EV charger equipped with a Type 2 socket. A Type 1 to Type 2 charging cable connects the Type 1 port on the car to the Type 2 socket on the EV charger. An EV charger with a permanently attached Type 2 cable cannot be connected directly without a separate, specifically compatible adapter solution.
Which EV charger is suitable for the Chevrolet Spark EV?
The Spark EV charges at a maximum of 3.7 kW, so a basic single-phase 16A EV charger is technically sufficient. Nevertheless, we often recommend an 11 kW charger. It charges the Spark EV at the same maximum speed of 3.7 kW, but it is already prepared for a future electric car with a higher charging capacity. Several of the chargers recommended below have an integrated MID meter. This accurately and verifiably records charging consumption, for example for reimbursement by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible charger with a MID meter may also be suitable for ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands.
| Situation | Recommended EV charger | MID meter | Why? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard home charging | Ratio io6 Pro 11–22 kW | Yes | Equipped with an integrated MID meter and an adjustable charging capacity of 11 to 22 kW, making it a future-proof choice for your next EV. |
| Business use or ERE registration in the Netherlands | Alfen Eve Single Pro-line 11 kW | Yes | The integrated MID meter accurately records charging consumption for business reimbursement. A compatible configuration may also be suitable for ERE registration in the Netherlands. |
| Budget option | Easee Charge Lite 11 kW | No | A more affordable and compact EV charger with a Type 2 socket. Without an integrated MID meter, it is less suitable for certified business reimbursement or ERE registration in the Netherlands. |
We always recommend having the connection installed by a qualified electrician. This is safer and may be important for your insurance coverage. View all 11 kW EV chargers in our range.
How long does it take to charge the Chevrolet Spark EV?
Charging the 21 kWh battery at the maximum charging power of 3.7 kW theoretically takes approximately six hours: 21 kWh divided by 3.7 kW. In practice, normal charging losses may make the session slightly longer. An 11 or 22 kW EV charger will not reduce this time because the car’s onboard charger limits the charging power to 3.7 kW. Leaving the car connected overnight is therefore more than sufficient to start the next day with a full battery.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Chevrolet Spark EV require a three-phase connection?
No. The Spark EV charges on a single phase at a maximum of 3.7 kW or 16A. A suitable single-phase electrical connection can provide this power. However, a qualified installer should verify that the electrical connection, circuit and protective equipment are suitable. A three-phase EV charger is mainly useful when you expect to purchase an electric car with a higher charging capacity in the future.
Why can a MID meter be important for the Chevrolet Spark EV?
An integrated MID meter accurately and verifiably records how much electricity is used while charging at home. This is particularly useful when charging costs are reimbursed by an employer, leasing company or your own business. In the Netherlands, a compatible EV charger with a MID meter may also support ERE registration. ERE certificates are only applicable in the Netherlands. For exclusively private charging, a MID meter is not essential, but it provides a transparent overview of actual charging consumption.
